An afterwork SUP session out on the lake? For stand-up paddling enthusiasts, it's not a question of wanting to, but rather of logistics. reacha has at least three trailers in its range, with which you can take your SUP to the nearest lake at any time by hand or bicycle. We have taken a closer look at the models and explain the differences: they are less in price, but more in use.

Stand-Up paddling is basically a healthy hobby: lots of fresh air, often in the middle of nature, out by the lake, far away from the noise of civilisation, paddling comfortably without stress, or getting the heart pump going - just when coming (i.e. to the lake), it can be more harmful for your health. Carry the SUP? Bad for the back! Transport it by car? In times of Greta Thunberg? Bad for the lungs and for the environment! With public transport? Possibly, but bad for the other passengers!

Transport SUPs simply by bicycle?

reacha bicycle trailer for SUP transport

The reacha SPORT LONG with 20" fat bike tires easily transports two i-SUPs

So you did go by bike? After all, that would be the most climate-friendly way to ship your SUP to the lake to indulge in water sports. Even if you own a car and even if you get one of the last parking spaces at the crowded lake, the car for transporting a SUP would have to be quite big, more like a bus, or at least have a roof rack.

Even when leaving the climate topic aside: SUPs are big, the up to 14 feet long Race SUP boards are even bigger, and with a normal-sized car the transport is simply very stressful. The founders of reacha have recognized this early. They are passionate SUP fans / surfers themselves and did not feel like taking their boards to the lake or beach with kayak carts anymore, that were too small or unwieldy SUP trolley.

The solution? Wheels, bars and tyres!

You were looking for a new, practical solution, founded their own company good goods tegernsee at Lake Tegernsee (in Bavaria) and promptly developed a bicycle trailer to transport SUPs easily and quickly. Actually, the trailer also works without a bike, as a hand trailer. And actually, you can also transport many other things with the trailer – especially other sports equipment or equipment such as windsurf boards or kayaks. And actually, the reacha founders have not only developed a bicycle trailer for SUPs, but several hand or bicycle trailers. Because the reacha SPORT is available in different variants, whether with fat bike tires or with an XXL drawbar for SUPs longer than 4.5m.
Depending on what SUPers value, where they go for water sports, and what they want to transport with the bicycle trailer, this or that model may be suitable. Therefore, in the following, we point out the similarities and differences.

Common features of the SUP-bike trailer

Even long race SUPs up to 4.5m in length fit on the reacha SPORT LONG

The three variants of the SPORT LONG, with 20" compact tires, with 20" beach tires, with 24" street tires, and the reacha SPORT PRO, are all suitable for transporting stand-up paddleboards (SUP) and are suitable for all sorts of water sports or outdoor activities. Because all hand and bicycle trailers are characterized by sturdy aluminum frames and various tires that can handle all types of road surfaces. With the specially developed bike connector, each model can be quickly and easily connected to any standard bicycle – whether it's a mountain bike, touring bike, road bike, or e-bike.

Sustainable production?

However, if you're already pedaling on the bicycle for the sake of the environment, the question naturally arises: where do the textile loading areas and the aluminum frame actually come from, and especially: are the materials produced sustainably (and locally)? First of all, the reacha founders have decided to minimize the use of plastic as much as possible. All plastic parts used consist of molded carbon, mainly made from recycled material from the aircraft industry.
The first prototype was even made from old bicycle tires from the scrapyard and was put together from a used wooden frame and an old windsurfing boom. This prototype then became the first bicycle trailer from reacha – the reacha SPORT LONG. Even today, reacha offers the opportunity in the Build Your Own collection to put together a reacha from individual components. This allows, for example, the recycling of old bicycle front tires that one still has at home.
Today, the aluminum frame is produced regionally at the surf boom producer CTM in Rosenheim, who has years of experience in aluminum tube processing.

Sufficient space - even for several SUPs

And if some of the reacha-bike trailer still come without additional side loading brackets, the Bows can be retrofitted to any model at any time, so that more loading space is available. In general, the modular components are individually adjustable in length and width. This means that they bike traileroffer space for SUP boards up to 14 feet long (which corresponds to approx. 4.26 metres) and can transport up to 35 kilograms - so if necessary, several boards can be transported. The notable differences are rather in the details.
Who wants to secure his SUP particularly well can also take a look at the neopren-covers as well as the specially developed straps. This keeps your SUP extra safe on the way to the lake!

Differences of the bike trailer for SUPs

SPORT LONG with 20" compact tires – delivers all the basics

The smallest variant, the SPORT LONG compact 20", is first and foremost characterized by a lower price. Thanks to its lightweight aluminum frame and modular plug-in system, the reacha SPORT is very easy to assemble and disassemble, and can therefore be stored in a space-saving manner. The 20" wheels provide a useful combination of agility, suspension, and compact dimensions. The SPORT LONG with 20" compact tires is ideal for those who do not want to reach top speeds when cycling and do not want to traverse uneven terrain (e.g., sand).

Bicycle trailer with small dimensions

SPORT LONG with 20" beach fatbike Tires – the "Offroad" Bicycle Trailer

Unlike the SPORT LONG with beach tires, the SPORT LONG with 20" beach fatbike tires is suitable for those who like to go "offroad" with their SUPs, surfboards, or other outdoor sports equipment. Thanks to the fatbike tires, it's easy to manually pull loads of up to 60 kg through sand, gravel, or dirt roads. Its aluminum frame is extremely stable and, with a bow on the side, it provides space not only for SUPs but also for plenty of other luggage, such as backpacks, paddles, tents, and more.

SPORT LONG with 24" street Tires – the "fast" Bicycle Trailer

Unlike the SPORT LONG with beach tires, the SPORT LONG with 24" street Tires is less suitable for the beach. Instead, it is more suitable for the city and particularly for those who like to travel a bit faster on the road. Its narrower wheels can also handle larger loads and maintain a smooth ride at higher speeds. Some of the reacha customers use the SPORT LONG with 24" street Tires to transport their SUP to the nearest lake, while others use it to bring their beer crates home: tastes and uses can vary.

SPORT PRO - a bicycle trailer for professionals?

For professionals - in the sense of professional stand-up paddlers - the SPORT PRO was not specifically developed. The "PRO" in the product name rather addresses larger business customers such as hotels or surf schools. With this bicycle trailer, they can transport up to eight SUPs, foam boards, wind or kite surfboards. A scenario that occurs less frequently in private environments. However, the SPORT PRO is also popular among photographers, filmmakers, craftsmen, and other professional groups to transport their heavy equipment from A to B.
In any case, the regionally manufactured aluminum walls give the SPORT PRO extremely high stability. They can even be individually printed, e.g. with your own logo or for other marketing purposes.

Conclusion: Which SUP bicycle trailer wins the race?

When it comes to the question of which reacha SUP bicycle trailer wins the value-for-money race, there is a simple and a more complex answer. First, the simple one: Basically, it's a matter of taste. None of the trailers are really cheap, but that's not surprising: After all, with reacha, you pay for quality and regional, sustainable production. This is reflected in the price. However, if you calculate the costs based on the long durability of reacha products, the price is no longer a downer.
Finally, the more complex answer: Hotels, surf schools, or water sports providers who rent out SUPs or other equipment in large quantities can really only choose the reacha PRO – after all, it was specifically designed for transporting multiple SUPs or surfboards. For private use, it's more a question of where you're going, how you're getting there, and what you intend to transport. As described, the SPORT LONG with 20" compact, 20" beach, or 24" street tires, as well as the SPORT PRO, were also developed for their own, genuine purposes.
And in the end, the choice isn't really that crucial, especially when you consider the greatest advantage: You no longer have to inflate and deflate your SUP boards directly at the water, because all reacha models also transport the largest SUP boards easily in their full size. This saves you the most valuable thing you have: time. Perhaps even enough time to take another look at the individual models in peace on the respective product pages ;)
